Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to check out this page. My name is Alyssa Shirek, I am the owner of Fundamentals Therapy, an Occupational Therapist and a Certified Lactation Counselor. I am also a mom, wife and North Dakota native. Upon completing my formal education (see below) I worked in a variety of settings including acute care, outpatient geriatrics and private practice pediatrics. My career path as well as personal experience led me to develop a passion for women's health. While living out of state I gave birth to my son and was fortunate to find a postpartum community of professionals to address physical and emotional health and rehabilitation as well as breastfeeding education and guidance. Upon returning to North Dakota I recognized a need for women's healthcare during the postpartum period or "4th trimester."
What is occupational therapy? "Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability." - AOTA 2019
As an occupational therapist, my unique clinical background allows me to assess and treat each patient holistically. This integrative approach includes evaluation of not only your physical health, but may also include assessment of your social and emotional well-being. An OT can provide hands-on therapy for pain relief, recommend modifications to your environment, suggest ergonomic strategies to prevent injury and educate you on all areas of coping with the challenges of the 4th trimester, including breastfeeding. In addition, my specialty training in pelvic floor therapy allows me to treat female pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, pain during intercourse, as well as postpartum complications.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Many of the conditions I treat can be difficult to talk about. At Fundamentals Therapy we will move at your pace, in order to get you back to the things YOU want to be doing.
